James attended the University of York, graduating in 1993 with a BA in English and Related Literature. He was one of the members of Derwent College, for which he was an enthusiastic rugby player. At university, callis was also a keen student actor, director, and writer, sometimes also appearing in productions put on by friends at Cambridge University, including the production of Harold Pinter’s The Birthday Party.

James attended the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, from which he graduated in 1996. In the same year, he made his TV debut when he landed the role of Major Tim Forrester, a recurring character for the sixth season of the TV series “Soldier Soldier. After that, he had several minor roles in various TV series, such as “A Dance to the Music of Time,” before being cast as a recurring character in another short-lasting TV series, “Sex, Chips and Rock n’ Roll” in 1999, but that same year he was also cast in “The Scarlet Pimpernel” and “Surety.”

Finally, in 2000 James portrayed Prince Ahmed in the TV miniseries “Arabian Nights,” The following year, he made his directorial debut with “Beginner’s Luck,” which he co-produced with Late Night Pictures and Angel Eye Film and Television, owned by Nick Cohen. In early 2003, he landed the recurring role of Gaius Baltar in the series “Battlestar Galactica,” remaining in the show for its five seasons until it ended in 2009 and gaining worldwide recognition. He also replicated the role in the TV movie of the same name in 2007 and appeared in the “Late Show with David Letterman.”

In 2016, James once again got a chance to replicate the role of Tom in another “Bridget Jones” sequel, “Bridget Jones’s Baby,” and that same year co-starred in Kenneth Kokin’s thriller, “Blood Moon”. Most recently, Callis played President Lincoln in the 2019 TV movie “Kevin Hart’s Guide to Black History” and co-starred in Matthew Federman and Stephen Scaia’s action TV series “Blood and Treasure.”
