Vera Farmiga’s full name is Vera Ann Farmiga born in Clifton city of New Jersey on 6^th August 1973. She was born in a Ukrainian family, her father Michael Farmiga and her mother Lubomyra “Luba”, her older brother Victor and other younger siblings namely Stephan, Nadia, Alexander, Laryssa, and lastly Taissa. Also, her grandparents Nadia and Theodor Spas. Her family turned from being Catholic to Protestant Christian during her childhood.

Since Vera Farmiga was raised in a Ukrainian family, her native language was Ukrainian but living in the American community. She started learning English at the age of six only after joining kindergarten. Her family moved to Whitehouse Station from Irvington and there she joined the Catholic school and spent most of her teenage involvement with Syzokrylli which is a Ukrainian folk-dancing ensemble. She was also a member of the Ukrainian Scottish organization called Plast. During her time with Syzokrylli, Vera Farmiga was a classically trained pianist and semi-professional folk dancer.

Vera Farmiga first started acting during her junior year at Hunterdon Central Regional High School. It was her friend that suggested her audition and she ended up getting the lead role in The Vampire as a Lady Margaret. She graduated from high school in 1991 and graduated from Syracuse University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1995. During her final year at the university, Vera Farmiga won the top prize for her acting in The Seagull which was performed at Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival where she portrayed the character Nina Zarechnaya.

They met each other on the set of Roar which was the new TV series at that time. They were secretly married in 1997 and were divorced after 7 years in 2004. Farmiga met an American musician from the band Deadsy through their mutual friend Allen Hughes.

She started dating Renn Hawkey and they got married on 13^th September 2008. Vera Farmiga was already five months pregnant when they got married. So, she gave birth to their first child, a son in Rhinebeck of New York in January 2009. In the following year 2010, she gave birth to a daughter in November. An American actress and photographer, Molly Hawkey is her sister-in-law. Farmiga is also close to Freddie Highmore who is an English actor and also her son’s godfather.

Career

In her early career, Vera Farmiga started acting in theaters. She acted in The Tempest as Miranda in American Conservatory Theater in early 1996. In the same year, she also performed in The Barrow Group which was the production of Good as Anne Hartman. She made her theatrical debut on Broadway in October 1996 along with Ed Harris and Daniel Massey. After the stage roles, her first TV film was Rose Hill where she co-starred with Emily Elliot.

In 1997, Vera Farmiga played the first main role in a series called Roar along with the famous Australian actor Heath Ledger and Sebastian Roche. After that, she went on to play a supporting role in Law & Order drama series and in a drama-thriller Return to Paradise along with Joaquin Phoenix and Vince Vaughn. Also, she played the supporting role in the movie Autumn in New York which was a romantic drama in 2000. Farmiga appeared in a supporting role in other movies called 15 Minutes, UC: Undercover, Snow White: The Fairest of Them All, and so on.

Farmiga started playing a lead role in 2002, She starred in romantic movies like Love in the Time of Money, and Under the Blue Sky, and also appeared in Dummy which was a comedy-drama.

In the year 2004, Farmiga made her first breakthrough in the drama film called Down to the Bone where she played the role of a drug-addicted mother. She was nominated for the Independent Spirit Award for Best Female Lead and she won her first-ever award Los Angeles Film Critics Association Award for Best Actress. In the following years, she appeared in the HBO drama Iron Jawed Angels in 2004 and in drama series called Touching Evil. She started playing supporting roles in movies like The Manchurian Candidate also played along with famous stars like Leonardo DiCaprio, and Matt Damon in the movie The Departed.

Vera Farmiga was again nominated for the Empire Award for Best Newcomer and another nomination for the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. In the year 2008, Farmiga starred as Elsa Hoess in the historical drama called The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, and because of her outstanding performance, she won the British Independent Film Award for Best Actress.

Farmiga went on to play various hit movies like Orphan, A Heavenly Vintage, Up in the air, and so on.

Farmiga also made her directorial debut by directing the movie Higher Ground, where she herself was a protagonist. The movie got a good review.
