Juan was born on 29th August 1975 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. His full name is Juan Diego Botto Rota and he is the son of a Spanish actress, Cristina Rota. During Argentine Dirty War, his father, Diego Botto was forced to disappear or was secretly abducted by the state. Botto has both Argentinian and Spanish nationality and he belongs to South-American ethnicity.

Diego Botto grew up with his older sister, Maria Botto who is also an Argentine-Spanish actress. His family moved to Madrid, Spain when he was a child.
